Humble Beginnings
Fermoy Community Hospital F. C. H. Fundraising Association was formed in 1983 and launched with a sponsored walk from Cork City to Fermoy led by the late Donncha O Dulaing. Our mission statement has always been to captivate the enormous goodwill and high esteem in which the local Hospital is held throughout its entire catchment area stretching from Castletownroche and Kildorry in the west to Ballynoe in the east and from Watergrasshill in the south to Kilbenny in the North. With the focus on turning such goodwill into financial support to enable the highest possible level of patient care be provided at the 71 bedded unit. Down through the years substantial funding has continued to be secured for numerous projects.
While the only capital project we were associated with to date was to raise over 300,000 euros to match the funding made available by a local benefactor for the building of the new Dochas ward at the hospital. All other funding raised over the last 38 years has been available to accommodate the regular requisitions made by the hospital management for equipment and logistical support to ensure that the highest level of patient care can be achieved in all cases , be it a individual patient care plan or in circumstances where the entire patient population will benefit from the availability of funding raised.
After campaigning for almost a quarter of a century, a major break through for all associated with the hospital was the opening of the new thirty bed unit in 1999.The new CULISE ward was a state of the art health facility, warmly welcomed by patients management and staff alike to replace the 0ld and totally inadequate B block that was built, back in 1857.
Sr Patricia Duggan was Matron and director of nursing for many years at the hospital and was in her own right a leading fundraiser ,while simultaneously campaigning vigorously over the years for the new building. Her efforts and efforts of so many more were realised, Sr Patricia oversaw the building and completion of the new thirty bed unit.
Another milestone was reached for the fundraisers with the opening of the Dochas ward in 2012. This thirty bed unit would ensure that all patients at the hospital would be accommodated at ground floor level with access and egress no longer a challenge for patients or staff and all in a environment that was patient centred facility.
As director of nursing Annette a local girl oversaw the completion of the Dochas wing at the hospital.
2021 and beyond
Go forward in 2021 we as a committee are conscious that the management and staff at the hospital are our greatest advocates as they continue 24 /7 to provide the highest possible level of patients care. This coupled with the enthusiasm exercised by so many clubs groups and organisations, big and small, throughout the entire catchment area of the hospital undertaking fundraising activities on their own initiative, allow us as a fundraising committee to look to the future with confidence in the knowledge that the high esteem in which the local hospital is held remains steadfast.

Statement from H.S.E.
St Patrick’s fundraising committee was set up in 1983 by members of the public and hospital staff with the aim to provide additional funding support for the residents in Fermoy Community Hospital. The work carried out by the committee over the years has raised the profile of the hospital at County level and the continued fundraising events organised by the committee over the years have supported the staff in their ability to provide care, for example through the purchase of additional equipment’s, which would otherwise not have been available through ordinary HSE funding.
The continued support and generosity that the fundraising committee receive from the local communities in the Fermoy and Surrounding areas is incredible and is very much appreciated by the residents and staff of Fermoy Community Hospital.
Over the years there have been many capital development projects to ensure the hospital evolves with the changing health care needs of the community. As part of the Senior Nurse Management Team since 2014 I have been very fortunate to work with the committee directly on a number of occasions. They have always been open to the requests submitted from the nurse management team which we believe will enhance the care and dignity of residents under our care. The committee have previously supported the Hospital with two big building projects since 1999. However time does not stand still and the facilities in Fermoy Community Hospital are evolving again with the current undertaking of an extensive capital project which when completed will ensure the hospital is compliant with the current HIQA regulations. The commitment given from the fundraising committee to Fermoy Hospital in relation to continue fundraising efforts for the current capital project is very much appreciated
